Dr. Justin M. Hughes

Who is Dr. Justin?

Dr. Justin and his wife, Laura, live in Waynewood with their children – Caleb, Juliana, James, and Rosie. What a blessing it has been to become parents and to be an active part of our close-knit community.

He loves being physically active and has completed the Richmond Marathon, two Tough Mudder adventure races, and placed 2nd in a regional powerlifting competition. These days you can find him at 6 AM doing a CrossFit workout at CrossFit NBHD in Old Town.

He also enjoys reading, grilling, Washington DC and Wake Forest sports, strong coffee, good beer, and being active in his local church and community. He is a member at Del Ray Baptist Church.

Continuing The Tradition

Continuing the tradition of his dedicated family, Dr. Justin is a 3rd generation orthodontist and 4th generation dentist. He is grateful and proud to join his father in carrying on the legacy of Hughes Orthodontics: creating beautiful smiles and providing excellent care to patients in Alexandria since 1958.

 

Education

Demonstrating longstanding commitment to dental health and orthodontic excellence, Dr. Justin Hughes has completed rigorous training and follows the legacy of his family in superior dental and orthodontic care.

Having received his bachelor's degree from Wake Forest University (Go Deacs!), his Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree from Virginia Commonwealth University (Go Rams!), and his Master's in Orthodontics from the University of Iowa (Go Hawks!) he has had outstanding academic preparation (even remaining committed to his school colors of Black and Gold throughout his training!).

In addition, Dr. Justin also completed a one-year dental residency at St. Barnabas Hospital in New York City prior to beginning his orthodontic residency in Iowa.

Board Certified

Dr. Justin Hughes is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. While all orthodontists have to be licensed and complete residency, less than 30% of all Orthodontists are board certified.

What is board certification?

Board certification is an optional, rigorous process by which a doctor submits his knowledge and clinical skills to the highest scrutiny. It involves both a written examination and a verbal, clinical evaluation of cases that the doctor has actually treated. Dr. Justin completed this process because he values continuing education and striving to be the best doctor he can be so that he can provide excellent service and care to his patients.

Why does board certification matter to me as a patient?

It matters because you know you're in the care of an expert who has demonstrated the highest level of clinical and academic excellence.

National Recognition

Dr. Justin was recently published in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (AJODO) and is a Key Opinion Leader and national speaker for 3M Oral Care.
