Education
Dr. Hughes received his bachelor's degree from the University of Richmond, his DDS degree from the Medical College of Virginia and his orthodontic residency from Boston University. While at Boston U, his research on "Orthodontic Treatment and how it relates to TMJ" was published in the American Journal of Orthodontics.
Continuing Education
Continuing education is essential to providing our patients with exceptional care. Dr. Hughes attends numerous seminars and meetings each year. He has been a highly sought out speaker for 3M and has traveled across the US, Canada, and Bermuda sharing his orthodontic pearls to other top tier orthodontists.
He has been actively involved in both local and national orthodontic organizations serving as past president in the Alexandria Dental Society, Northern Virginia Orthodontic Study Club, and the Virginia Association of Orthodontist. He served as a member of the Council on Communication for the American Association of Orthodontists and is a fellow in the American College of Dentists (ACD) which is an honor since less than 4% of US dentists receive this achievement!
In the Practice
Dr. Hughes has been around dentistry all of his life! His grandfather, Dr. JR Hughes, practiced dentistry for over 50 years. As a teenager, Dr. Hughes spent summers working at his dad's practice doing lab work and assisting chairside. He joined his dad in practice in 1986 and worked with him until he retired in 1988.
Dr. Hughes loves orthodontics because it is the perfect blend between science and art. He is a people person and loves the interaction with all the patients. Getting to know them on a personal level and delivering an orthodontic result that makes them happy is truly satisfying.
Dr. Hughes loves to perform magic tricks for his patients and the practice features a 'magic trick of the month'. Your experience at Hughes Orthodontics is guaranteed to be a magical one!
FAMILY LIFE
Dr. Hughes grew up in Alexandria and actually lives three blocks from his childhood home.

He and his wife, Tammy have been married for 37 years and have three sons.
The oldest son, Justin is our own Dr. Justin! He is the fourth generation dentist in the family!
Taylor is a graduate of Elon University and is currently living in Oceanside, CA with his wife, Becca, and their children. He tried his best to stay out of the family business, but it is in his blood, and he is the Southern California Clear Aligner Specialist for 3M.
Marshall followed his father’s footsteps attending St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes school, the University of Richmond and VCU where he recently received his doctorate degree in Physical Therapy. He lives in Northern Virginia so if you have some aches and pain that require an expert in physical therapy, he’s your man!
In his spare time, Dr. Hughes enjoys learning new magic tricks, performing magic shows for charitable organizations, traveling, playing golf, and exercising.

Favorite Band:
Earth, Wind & Fire baby! I first saw them in concert in 1975 and was immediately hooked by their incredible showmanship. In later concerts (I have been to 6 total!) they really struck a cord with me when they started incorporating illusions into their performances!
Favorite Movie:
Tombstone – “Doc” Holliday dentist gone rogue teams up with lawman, Wyatt Earp, and becomes one of the most famous gunfighters of the wild west. You gotta see it!
