Meet Dr. Herbert Hughes

Dr Hughes is honored to be in a wonderful and rewarding profession. It is unique to be able to follow in his dad's footsteps and continue to treat generations of families within the community. Orthodontics is more of a passion than a job and Dr. Hughes looks forward to everyday at Hughes Orthodontics.
Education
Dr. Hughes received his bachelor's degree from the University of Richmond, his DDS degree from the Medical College of Virginia and his orthodontic residency from Boston University. While at Boston U, his research on "Orthodontic Treatment and how it relates to TMJ" was published in the American Journal of Orthodontics.
Continuing Education
Continuing education is essential to keeping up with new advances in orthodontics. Dr. Hughes attends numerous seminars and meetings each year on both the local and national levels. For the past 22 years, he has played an active role in the Northern Virginia Orthodontic Study Club and currently holds the position of president.
Dr Hughes is one of the board of directors for the Virginia Association of Orthodontists and organizes continuing educational meetings for orthodontists throughout the state.
He believes in "Caring Enough to Share" and enjoys making presentations to dentists, hygienists and orthodontic study clubs.
In the Practice
Dr. Hughes has been around dentistry all of his life! His grandfather, Dr. JR Hughes, practiced dentistry for over 50 years. As a teenager, Dr. Hughes spent summers working at his dad's practice doing lab work and assisting chairside. He joined his dad in practice in 1986 and worked with him until he retired in 1988.
Dr. Hughes loves orthodontics because it is the perfect blend between science and art. He is a people person and loves the interaction with all the patients. Getting to know them on a personal level and delivering an orthodontic result that makes them happy is truly satisfying.
Dr. Hughes loves to perform magic tricks for his patients and the practice features a 'magic trick of the month'. Your experience at Hughes Orthodontics is guaranteed to be a magical one!
Family Life
Dr. Hughes grew up in Alexandria and actually lives three blocks from his childhood home. He and his wife, Tammy have been married for 27 years and have three sons. The oldest, Justin, is in dental school at VCU and will be the fourth generation dentist in the family! Taylor, the middle son is attending Elon University and the youngest, Marshall,is attending the University of Richmond. Two dachshunds, Webster and Houdini, have been welcome additions to the family.

In his spare time, Dr Hughes enjoys learning new magic tricks, performing magic shows for charitable organizations, growing giant pumpkins, playing golf, and exercising.
