Emergencies
If you feel that you have a true emergency please contact Dr. Hughes on his cell phone at 703-727-4903.
Type of Emergencies and First Aid
Loose or Broken Brackets When a bracket becomes detached from the tooth, please give our office a call.
Broken Wires or Irritation For immediate relief, the use of nail clippers can be helpful in cutting the wire that is poking inside your mouth. When a wire jabs your cheek or tongue, gently try to move the wire into place with a pencil eraser. Cover the wire with wax that has been included in our “home care kit.”
Lost or Broken Retainers Retainers are designed to hold your teeth in place. Not wearing retainers as directed will result in shifting of teeth. Please call immediately if you lost your retainer or if your retainer doesn't fit, so another one can be made for you. If you wait too long, the changes that occur may not be corrected with a new retainer and can require additional braces.
Treatment Discomfort Some tenderness should be expected after each adjustment and the period of tenderness varies with each patient and procedure. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help this discomfort. Studies show that medication taken 1/2 to 1 hour prior to the start of the procedure can reduce the amount of discomfort you experience. Staying with one medication may also improve relief because of the build-up of the medication in your system. Please take all medications only as recommended on the label or as directed by Dr. Hughes.
